Susan Atkins, NCTM

Susan has been teaching piano for 20 years and has owned the Piano Learning Center since 2007.  She began her piano study at age seven and has studied with Enid Lindborg of Omaha, NE, and Rose Tomlin of St. Mary’s College in Leavenworth, KS, both of whom were graduates of the Juilliard School of Music.  Miss Tomlin was also a protégé of Sergei Tarnowsky, a piano teacher of the young Vladimir Horowitz.   Because Susan’s husband served on active duty for the first 17 years of their marriage, she has had the opportunity to teach piano and preschool music to students  around the world, including Germany and Saudi Arabia. 

Susan is a certified piano teacher with the Music Teachers National Association and is President of the Tidewater Music Teachers Forum and a member of the National Federation of Music Teachers.  Susan’s students have garnered superior ratings in the Junior Festival hosted by NFMT for the last four years.  Susan's students participate in many local piano events and competitions including the Monster Concert, Virginia State Theory Test and Eastern District Competition.

Susan has also worked as a church pianist, organist, and keyboardist with praise bands.  She has extensive experience as an accompanist for high school, college and community choirs.  Susan also volunteered with many different children’s choirs, and was a children’s choir director for seven years.  Currently she is a freelance musician.
